UV Measurement

On Site UV Measurement, Assessment and Consultancy

UV Measurement and Assessment ServiceOur UV light measurement and assessment service provides companies and organisations with a path to compliance with The Control of Artificial Optical Radiation at Work Regulations 2010.

When assessing a personal UV light exposure scenario the crucial question is, can a clear and unambiguois statement be made that the UV light exposure limit values are observed or exceeded?

Employers must assess the level of risk for adverse health effects by determining UV light personal exposure levels and comparing with the exposure limit values.

A typical UV light exposure scenario measurement and assessment includes:

  • Measurement of spectral output of UV light sources
  • Measurement of UV-A light irradiance in the spectral region 315 nm - 400 nm at appropriate distances from the UV light source, depending on any person's closest proximity, to assess compliance with the UV-A light radiant exposure limit value of 10,000 J/m2 for unprotected eyes, and/or
  • Measurement of UV light effective irradiance in the spectral region 180 nm - 400 nm at appropriate distances from the UV light source, depending on any person's closest proximity, to assess compliance with the UV light effective radiant exposure limit value of 30 J/m2eff for unprotected skin and eyes.
  • Calculation of hazard values, i.e. maximum permissible UV light exposure times at the measurement positions.
  • Survey existing control measures, including pre-operational checks, safe working practices, information and training provided to workers.
  • Correlation of data and submission of report.

Our report is set out in a format which presents information in a user friendly manner for use with the '5 Steps to Risk Assessment' procedure from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). It provides the person responsible for the health and safety of people exposed to UV light from the sources assessed with the necessary information to either:

a) Identify their duties and possible obligations to revise existing risk assessments and implement additional control measures and safe working practices under The Control of Artificial Optical Radiation at Work Regulations 2010 based on the general principles of prevention set out in schedule 1 to The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.

or

b) Undertake a suitable and sufficient Risk Assessment, implement appropriate control measures and develop safe working practices under The Control of Artificial Optical Radiation at Work Regulations 2010 based on the general principles of prevention set out in schedule 1 to The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
