UV 250W Hand Lamp exhibited for the first time at British Pig and Poulty Fair
Dates: 15th - 16th May 2012
Location: Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire
The UV 250W hand held flood lamp from UV Light Technology Limited has become essential standard equipment for quality control of free range eggs. It is widely used by DEFRA egg marketing inspectors, egg packing centres, wholesalers and food processors for detection of wash marks or evidence of egg washing and wiping.
Washing or wiping eggs to remove adhering dirt or foreign materials is not permitted under EU regulations. This is because the egg shell has a natural protective coating, known as the cuticle which resists the penetration of bacteria. The content of an egg is usually sterile when laid. The main cause of microbiological contamination is the washing or wiping of eggs. Wetting the shell allows micro-organisms on the shell to penetrate and multiply inside.
In addition to revelation of evidence of washing or wiping, the UV 250W Hand Lamp will highlight spoilage by bacteria and mould (pseudomonas bacteria). It will also show cade marks such as two parallel lines on the egg shell. These marks would be produced when the egg is laid and hits the bottom of the cage, providing evidence against unscrupulous farmers trying to pass off caged eggs as free range.
The UV 250W Hand Lamp is a robust and lightweight blacklight which produces high intensity UV-A light over a large area. This provides excellent brightness of fluorescent indications against a large background even in normal lighting conditions, reducing searching movements and increasing the probability of detection of rejects. It is suitable for hand operation, angle poise or overhead mounting.
The unrivalled performance is due to the combination of the highly efficient 250 W Iron doped metal halide UV bulb, optimised reflector design and special woods glass black UV-A filter glass which is transparent only to the UV-A region between 315 nm and 400 nm.
The useful operating life of the UV bulb is approximately 500 hours. An elapsed hour counter is fitted in the power supply unit to facilitate UV bulb change scheduling.
It is supplied with comprehensive operating instructions detailing all the necessary information for the safe use of UV light in the workplace, and compliance with The Control of Artificial Optical Radiation at Work Regulations 2010. This includes maximum permissible UV light exposure times for the unprotected skin and eyes at various distances from the UV lamp. This is essential information and should be a ‘must have’ in any procurement policy.
This product is just one of UV Light Technology Limited’s extensive range of ultraviolet light equipment for an increasingly broad spectrum of applications worldwide.
A readily accessible introduction to the use of UV light across a wide variety of applications is provided on the Company’s web site, www.uv-light.co.uk. This also acts as a product selector based on application, as only UV equipment which is suitable will be displayed in a structured manner.
